Short history of Beckfoot Hotel accommodation and some of the people who have owned it since 1574.

1574 the name Langhornes appeared and in 1627 William Longhorne signed a Deed of Endowment for Bampton Grammar School

Langhornes still at Beckfoot as date stone TML: EL:1733. (Not as a Hotel)

1746 Noble at Beckfoot Date stone        N

It seems probable that this branch of the Noble family had lived at Beckfoot since 1746. date stones however cannot always be proof of occupancy. This branch of the family is first heard of at High Howe in 1615 and can be traced through until Miss Elizabeth’s death in 1933,

1808 Thomas and Ann(nee Nicholson) Noble lived at Beckfoot.

1842 Ann Noble died.

1858 Thomas Noble died.

1858 William Noble, his wife Jane (nee Atkinson) and two daughters Mary Eleanor and Elizabeth moved to Beckfoot from High Howe.

Miss Elizabeth described Beckfoot as being “a house at that time too small for us” so it seems likely that major alterations and new buildings to stables, cow byres etc. were made during her fathers lifetime and in 1892 the completion of the extension to Beckfoot was undertaken by the Miss Nobles and the date stone over the hall fireplace is for all to see a horseshoe with N in the middle and 1892 over the top.

1925 Miss Mary Eleanor Noble died

1933 Miss Elizabeth died. On her death Beckfoot passed onto her cousin Mr R.J.Castley. The higher farms above and adjoining fells were requisitioned by Manchester Corporation at the time of building the new dam and reservoir at Haweswater. In 1938 Mr Castley’s son Noble was handed Beckfoot but he shortly joined the armed forces and it was sold.

1941 To meet death duties the property was sold to Ivy Von Grundherr for £2,585.

1949 sold to Margaret May Paterson Leon £4,700

1951 sold to Nancy Parker £5,500

1952 Eva Murray

1961 Barrett

1964 John Tindal owned the property

1977 the present owners Lesley & Malcolm David White came with their family Martin and Simon. Graham their youngest son was born in 1978. The House has been run as a guest house, Hotel and now a Country guest house for the last 29 years.

2008 is now our 31st anniversary year at Beckfoot
