31st Year at Beckfoot and still going strong

We came to Beckfoot on the 30th of September 1977.  We then spent the following 29 years running the house as an hotel and later as a country guest house gradually improving it and building up our list of regularly returning customers. In 1994 we started Guitar Weekends which turned my hobby into a business. Over the next few months I will be adding to this page information and photos about Beckfoot and our time here.

We arrived at Beckfoot on the last day in September 1977 having purchased the property for a princely sum of £43,500 as a private house. David, myself, and our two young sons Martin and Simon, my Mum, Dad and sister Sara.  Our other son Graham was born in 1978 making it eight people in all to live here. We had to work very hard to turn what was a private house into a guesthouse by the following Easter. The bedrooms had only wash basins in them and there was a communal bathroom and separate toilet where everyone had to wait their turn, as you can imagine tempers could get a little frayed when desperate. However the two rooms on the back of the house had en-suite within two years and this relieved the problem a little.

It was after my Mum and Dad went back to Devon in 1981 that we did the major refurbishment work of getting all the rooms en-suite, with plenty of family and friends pitching in to get it completed in time for a fresh season. My sister Sara stayed with us to finish her education at Carlisle College. She is now married with a family of her own and living in Penrith.

Over the years we have carried out many improvements to make our guests feel they can treat Beckfoot as home from home.
